Australia will co-sponsor a two-day conference in Geneva
this week to consider the implications of the South Asian
nuclear tests for the non-proliferation and disarmament
regimes.

Following the nuclear tests by India and Pakistan,
Australia, together with other members of the international
community, expressed concern at the implications of these
tests for global and regional security.

The conference will look at ways of advancing and
strengthening the international non-proliferation regime
with a view to enhancing global and regional security.

It will bring together officials, academics and
researchers from the international arms control community,
to examine ways of strengthening the international
non-proliferation regime which meet the security interests
of India and Pakistan as well as those of the international
community.

The Conference is being hosted by the United Nations
Institute for Disarmament Research (UNIDIR) from 7-8
September in Geneva at the Palais des Nations.

An Australian, Richard Starr, will chair the conference.
Mr Starr was formerly Ambassador for Disarmament in Geneva
and is currently the Australian Ambassador in Madrid. The
other conference co-sponsors are Denmark, Italy, New
Zealand, Norway, and the United States.
