MEDIA RELEASE

I am delighted to announce that the former Prime Minister of Thailand, His Excellency Anand Panyarachun, will deliver the Annual Address of the Centre for Democratic Institutions (CDI) at Parliament House on Wednesday 24 November.

Last year, I established the CDI to help developing countries create and strengthen democratic institutions and practices. The CDI gives effect to the Australian Government's commitment to good governance, democratic consolidation and human rights, particularly in the Asia Pacific. Through the CDI, countries in the region can exchange ideas and experiences of democracy.

Mr Anand is an exceptional choice for this year's CDI Annual Address. He is not only a key figure in the democratic transformation of Thailand, but is also a strong advocate for the strengthening of institutions in this era of globalisation.

Mr Anand is a highly respected figure in Thai society and the principal player in the drafting of the new constitution. He is regarded as an authority on good governance issues and is widely consulted on major developments relating to politics in Thailand. Mr Anand was appointed Prime Minister of Thailand from March 1991 - April 1992 and from June 1992 - October 1992, overseeing the re-introduction of electoral democracy in Thailand.

Annual Address:

11.50 am -1.30 pm - Wednesday 24 November 1999

Great Hall - Parliament House
