The Australian Government will train visiting Philippines National Police on
how better to comply with the provisions of international human rights law.
Originally designed to cater for three senior Philippines internal
investigations officers, the program has been extended to include two additional
officers. The police officers will be able to see how internal investigations
are managed by the Australian Federal Police.
As part of their training, the officers - who will visit Australia from the
16th to the 20th of this month - will also attend the New South Wales Police
Royal Commission.
The program is delivered through the Human Rights Fund, jointly administered
by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and AusAID - the Australian
Agency for International Development - and will be coordinated by officers from
the Australian Federal Police.
The program builds on previous training funded by Australia for the Filipino
police in areas such as sexual assault investigation techniques.
The project is part of the Government's program to promote good governance in
countries within the region.
The Government has also approved $20 000 in funding assistance for a
conference on landmines organised by the International Committee of the Red
Cross to be held in Manila from the 20th to the 23rd of July.
The three day conference will be attended by delegates from developing
countries in the Asian region.
