Emergency Funds for Pakistan Flood Victims

MEDIA RELEASE

Australia will contribute $300,000 in emergency assistance for victims of
the recent severe flooding in Pakistan, the Parliamentary Secretary for Foreign
Affairs Mrs Chris Gallus, announced today.

'Australia's contribution through UNICEF will help up to 550,000
people by restoring a clean water supply, providing temporary shelter and
rebuilding schools.'

'More than 230 people lost their lives and an estimated one million
Pakistanis were made homeless during the July and August floods.' Mrs
Gallus said.

'The worst affected areas are in the south and south-western provinces,
particularly in Sindh and Balochistan and the cities of Badin, Tharparkar and
Thatta, ' Mrs Gallus said.

This year Australia has also provided emergency flood relief to Sri Lanka
and China.
