The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade has reviewed its Travel Advice for Papua New Guinea issued on 28 March 1994 and advises Australians intending to travel to and in Papua New Guinea that they must exercise due care and maintain a very high level of security awareness.

Australians proposing to visit Bougainville Province are advised that travel should only be undertaken with the appropriate authorisation of the Papua New Guinea Government. Persons travelling to Bouganville without prior authorisation of the Papua New Guinea Government do so illegally.

The Department encourages Australian residents of Papua New Guinea, and those intending to travel to Papua New Guinea, including those who intend to walk the Kokoda Track, to register with the Australian High Commission, Port Moresby (Locked Bag 129, Wai Igani, NCD), telephone 3259333 or facsimile 3259183.
