The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade has reviewed its travel advice for Pakistan and advises that there is continuing concern for security in that country.

In particular, because of ethnic and sectarian related violence in Karachi, Australians should consider deferring non essential travel to that city. Australians who nonetheless visit Karachi are urged to maintain a high degree of security awareness at all times, especially by avoiding areas of the city where violence is known to be prevalent and by limiting travel at night.

The Department suggests that Australians transiting Karachi airport should endeavour to schedule their flights so that it is not necessary for them to leave the airport premises.

Security problems continue in the remote rural areas of Pakistan, especially the tribal areas along the border with Afghanistan. The Department suggests Australians contemplating travel to these areas exercise care and keep themselves informed about developments.

Australian citizens in Pakistan are encouraged to register their presence and onward movements with the Australian High Commission in Islamabad on telephone 92 51 214902, fax 92 51 214763, telex 5804 Ausem PK. Further information on current security conditions in Pakistan is available from the High Commission or from the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade in Canberra on (06) 2619111.
