The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade advises Australians intending to travel to Laos that the requirement to obtain travel permits from Lao Government authorities for travel within Laos has been abolished.
Australians, nevertheless, should be aware that the Lao Foreign Ministry has advised that travel in parts of the country may still be dangerous. Australians travelling outside urban centres by road or river are therefore advised to clear such travel in advance through relevent Lao Government offices or tourist agencies.
Australians travelling in the countryside should maintain a high level of personal security awareness and all Australians are advised to register their presence in Laos with the Australian Embassy, J Nehru Street, Phone Xay, Vientiane (telephone 856-21-41-360/02/04/05/09/10 or fax 856-21-413601). The Embassy can also provide more specific information on request.
