The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade advises that, owing to law and order problems, particularly in and around the capital and other tourist areas, Australians travelling to Guatemala should exercise due care and maintain a high level of personal security awareness.

Guatemala has experienced a spate of child abductions, presumably for the purpose of illegal adoptions. Australians therefore should be aware that friendly behaviour towards Guatemalan children, including taking their photographs, particularly in rural areas, can be viewed with suspicion or be misinterpreted.

As there is no Australian Embassy in Guatemala, Australians intending to visit Guatemala may contact the Australian Embassy, Ruben Dario 55, Colonia Polanco, 11580 Mexico, D. F. (Telephone : 52 5 5315225) or the Department in Canberra on (06) 2613305 for further information.
