The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade has reviewed its Travel Advice
issued on 31 May 1994 for the Republic of Georgia and advises Australians
intending to visit Georgia to exercise due care and maintain a high level
of personal security awareness.
While the security situation in the capital, Tbilisi, has been restored
to normal, travel to the north western region of Abkhazia, where there may
be a possibility of armed conflict, should be avoided. There is also a
risk of conflict in the north eastern region of South Ossetia. Violent
crime poses a serious threat throughout much of the country. Uncontrolled
possession of firearms is widespread. Unnecessary travel outside Tbilisi,
particularly at night, should preferably be avoided.
As there is no Australian Embassy in Georgia, travellers should contact
the Australian Embassy in Moscow at Kropotkinsky Pereulok 13 (telephone
956 6070 or fax 956 6170). Travellers are encouraged to register their
presence in Georgia with the Embassy in Moscow to advise their planned itinerary.
