The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade has reviewed its travel advice for Ethiopia issued 1 September 1994 and advises Australians intending to travel to Ethiopia that while travel to most parts of the country is safe, there are still incidents of banditry in some areas. Border areas, particularly the eastern border with Somalia, are insecure and Australians should consider deferring non-essential travel to these areas for the time being. Australians who do visit these areas should exercise due care and maintain a very high level of personal security awareness.
The Department urges Australian travellers to Ethiopia to contact the Australian High Commission, Riverside Drive (400 metres off Chiromo Road), Nairobi, Kenya (telephone 254-2-44 5034/39) or the Canadian Embassy in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia (telephone 251-1-71 3022), for advice on current developments.
