'The Australian Government places a high priority on helping the people
of Ulaanbaatar through the development of sound urban infrastructure in the
poorer Ger suburbs on the outskirts of the city', Australia's
Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mrs Chris Gallus,
said today.
Mrs Gallus visited some of the 25 sub-projects ofthe World Bank Urban
Services Improvement Project that the Australian Government funds through the
Australian Agency for International Development (AusAID).
These projectsprovide urban infrastructure in the suburban areas of
Ulaanbaatar, including roads, bridges, sewerage systems, water supply, street
lighting, footpaths, and bathhouses. So far, $6.1 million has been provided to
support these projects.
Mrs Gallus saw first-hand how the Health Improvement for Primary Care
Project (HIPPO) had upgraded the management of local clinics in the
neighbourhood.
The Parliamentary Secretary also visited a local hospital where she heard
how the emergency paediatric guidelines developed through an Australian aid
project had almost halved infant mortality in the local population.
