I am pleased to announce Australia will provide $1.5 million to Australian
Volunteers International and CARE Australia to assist with the rebuilding of
Afghanistan.
While the situation in Afghanistan remains unstable, the international
community has begun to focus on the country's recovery and reconstruction needs.
To meet these needs, Australia and the international community will undertake a
range of aid and development initiatives, including programs for stimulating the
economy and laying the foundations for Afghanistan's future administration.
Funding for Australian Volunteers International will build on its long
history of assistance to Afghanistan and its close links with the Afghan
community in Australia. A range of development initiatives will be implemented,
including literacy programs, water sanitation, and training for Afghan women in
project management.
CARE Australia's activities will assist local non-government organizations
rebuild their capacity to deliver services in such areas as primary education
and income generation projects for women.
This announcement is part of Australia's commitment of $40.3 million in
assistance to Afghanistan for a range of activities, including emergency food
aid, removal of landmines, immunisation, nutrition, drug control and assistance
to the UN Interim Authority.
