MEDIA RELEASE

Australia will provide further support to the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia which have been established to prosecute those leaders most responsible for crimes against humanity during the Khmer Rouge period.

The Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia are an important way in which the Royal Government of Cambodia, with the assistance of the international community, is addressing the legacy of the period 1975-79.

Australia welcomes progress by the Chambers in 2007 with five suspects under detention.

As part of Australia's ongoing assistance it will provide an additional $500,000 to support the Cambodian side of the process.

Australia has already contributed $3.8 million in overall support to the trials since 2003.
