I am pleased to announce that Australia is providing $300 000 in response to
the international appeal launched over the weekend by the Government of Vietnam
following Cyclone Linda on 2 November. These funds will be channelled through
Australian Non-Government Organisations.
Like many Australians, I am saddened to hear of the loss of life and
extensive damage caused by Cyclone Linda, the worst natural disaster of its kind
to hit the southern provinces of Vietnam in a century.
At least 300 people have died as a result of the cyclone and nearly 2000
people are still reported missing. Tens of thousands of houses and thousands of
schools have been destroyed or damaged. The total cost to Vietnam is estimated
at $US200 million.
It is expected that Australia's contribution will focus on rehabilitating
damaged areas to assist in restoring economic activity as quickly as possible.
This may involve re-equipping fishermen and restoring rice paddy fields so
farmers can recommence production of one of the country's major exports.
Another priority is locating, raising and repairing sunken boats to restore
the economic livelihood of people in the affected provinces, especially Ca Mau
and Kien Giang. Cyclone Linda has severely affected one of Vietnam's most
productive fishing zones.
The $300 000 in emergency assistance is in addition to the $15 000 initially
provided by the Australian Embassy in Hanoi and the Consulate General in Ho Chi
Minh City.
