MEDIA RELEASE

Australia will contribute to a major Vietnamese Government program to supply clean water and sanitation to improve the health and living conditions of the country's rural poor.

Up to A$7 million will be provided through Australia's international aid agency, AusAID, to assist the Vietnamese Government to supply clean water to around 7.4 million people, and hygienic latrines to 1.3 million households and 10,000 schools.

The funding will help promote innovative approaches to improve access to safe water and encourage the use of appropriate technology.

It will also help in the development of new water pricing models and encourage community group and private sector involvement in improving water supply operations and maintenance.

Australia has worked with Denmark and the Netherlands to design the support for Vietnam's National Target Program which also aims to improve the performance and effectiveness of investments.
