The Australian Government will provide $2 million as immediate relief and emergency assistance to the victims of the severe earthquake in Iran's south eastern city of Bam.
Australian aid program officials continue to monitor UN and other international assessments and stand ready to consider additional assistance based on needs.
The earthquake has brought terrible pain and suffering to the people of Bam. Some 20,000 people are believed to have perished. Up to 80 per cent of homes may have been destroyed, according to initial estimates.
I have written to Iran's Foreign Minister, Kamal Kharrazi, to offer the deepest condolences of the Australian Government and people at this most difficult time.
Australia's assistance will contribute to the international relief efforts now underway in Iran. Australian officials will coordinate with international agencies on the ground to determine how the funds can be best used to address the needs of victims.
If Australians wish to assist additionally the victims of the earthquake I encourage them to make a cash donation to an Iran earthquake appeal by an Australian aid organisation. Details of these organisations can be found on www.acfid.asn.au.
