The Australian Government, through AusAID, will provide $2 million in humanitarian assistance to flood victims in southern Africa.
Australia's contribution will include access to safe water and sanitation facilities, emergency shelter, seeds and equipment to grow food, and family kits containing blankets, mosquito nets, cutlery and crockery.
Experienced and effective Australian non-government organisations and international aid agencies will deliver Australia's assistance. These include Caritas in Malawi, the Red Cross in Zambia, and World Vision and Oxfam in Mozambique.
A significant proportion of the package will be set aside to help these countries enhance their capacity to respond to emergencies.
Recent widespread flooding in southern Africa continues to affect the people of Mozambique, Malawi and Zambia, lessening food security and increasing the risk of disease outbreaks. Up to a half a million people have lost property, businesses, infrastructure, livestock and crops.
