MEDIA RELEASE

Through Australia's international aid agency, AusAID, $82,000 has been provided to a Zimbabwean non-government organisation which covers the costs of medical care and counselling services for the victims of political violence in Zimbabwe.

The Australian Government is appalled at the barbaric actions of the Government of Zimbabwe in brutally attacking the political opposition in February and March this year. These actions have again clearly demonstrated the Mugabe Government's disregard for human rights.

Australia's support for assistance to the victims of human rights abuses in Zimbabwe complements its support for civil society groups promoting human rights, democracy, good governance and independent media in Zimbabwe.

Australia's aid program in Zimbabwe also aims to reduce the suffering of Zimbabwe's vulnerable people whose living conditions are rapidly deteriorating.

Through AusAID, the Australian Government program has contributed $2 million to help improve the lives of ordinary Zimbabweans so far in 2006-07 and approximately $4.5 million in 2005 - 06.
