MEDIA RELEASE

Australia will provide an initial $1 million in immediate humanitarian relief to assist the victims of Super Typhoon Reming that smashed into the Philippines yesterday.

The Australian Government has been in contact with President Arroyo to convey the sympathy and condolences of the Australian people for the tragic loss of life as a result of the typhoon and mudslides, and to offer our assistance.

Over 200 are already confirmed dead and the toll is expected to rise. Large numbers of people have been displaced. Thousands of homes have been destroyed, particularly in the Bicol region and in villages around the Mayon volcano.

International agencies (UNDP, UNICEF), the Philippines Red Cross and the Philippines National Emergency Services have mobilised relief efforts, though conditions on the ground are making it difficult to reach victims.

AusAID is working closely with these relief agencies to coordinate emergency assistance to victims and will provide essential food, shelter and medical supplies.

The United Nations Disaster Assessment Coordination Office has placed personnel, including Australian experts, on stand-by to mobilise an assessment team if requested.

The Australian Government stands ready to offer further assistance as additional needs are identified.
