MEDIA RELEASE

Vietnam's ability to engage effectively with the regional and international
economy was given a boost today, with the finalisation of arrangements for
Australia to provide the country with special legal training.

An agreement on an AusAID scheme - the Legal Sector Assistance Project -was
signed today by Vietnam's Minister of Justice, His Excellency Dr Nguyen Dinh
Loc, and the Parliamentary Secretary for Foreign Affairs, Mr Andrew Thomson.

The project includes a variety of training courses which will allow
Vietnamese lawyers and judicial officers to become acquainted with legal
terminology used in the English-speaking world, as well as gain technical
expertise in international law.

In line with its economic reforms and interest in becoming an integrated
member of the global community, Vietnam is in the process of reforming its legal
framework.

As a considerable proportion of legal texts, particular those on
international law, are written in English, it is important that Vietnam's legal
community has the opportunity to gain English language skills.

By enhancing Vietnam's capacity to harmonise its legal processes with
accepted international legal practice, the AusAID training project will also
improve the climate for Australian business investment in Vietnam.

The estimated cost of the project is $2.2 million over two years.
