Australia is hosting the 2004 meeting of the Donor Support Group of the
International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) at Maroochydore on 3 and 4
June.
The Donor Support Group of major donor governments meets annually to discuss
future policy directions for the ICRC.
ICRC has a unique mandate to protect and assist the victims of war in a
neutral and independent manner and to uphold international humanitarian law as
outlined in the Geneva Conventions.
This meeting comes at a time when many of the core tenets of humanitarian
assistance face challenges from the changing nature of conflict and
international terrorism.
I look forward to meeting with the ICRC President, Dr Kellenberger, and
reiterating Australia's ongoing support for the ICRC.
ICRC is a valuable partner for Australia's humanitarian program and one
of the most effective agencies we support globally and in the Asia-Pacific
region.
In the 2004-05 Budget Australia announced a $5 million contribution to the
ICRC 2005 Headquarters Appeal. The $2 million increase in core funding reflects
our high regard for the ICRC's work.
Australia's contributions to the ICRC this financial year also include
funding and support to field delegations and appeals in the Sudan, Cambodia,
Indonesia, the Pacific region and the Middle East.
