On my visit to Tonga, I am pleased to announce a major initiative by the
Australian Government to help the Kingdom of Tonga improve public health and
protect and improve its natural environment.
This is the provision of an effective, environmentally sound, and sustainable
solid waste management system. I will attend the official launch of the project
in Nuku'alofa today.
An action plan for tackling the serious health and environmental hazards
posed by current waste management capacities on Tonga's main island, Tongatapu,
will be implemented over the next four years at a total cost of up to $8
million.
Preparatory work undertaken through AusAID has shown that current solid waste
management practices are causing degradation of lagoon resources and a
significant increase in risks to public health. Illegal dumping and unnecessary
burning also detract from the attractions of Tonga.
Designed in close consultation with the Government of Tonga, the new waste
management system will contribute to healthier living conditions for residents
of Tongatapu and has the potential to raise incomes.
The project will be an important step towards preventing further
environmental degradation of the environment at the lagoon, particularly at the
current dumpsite, which will be a potentially positive outcome for Tonga's
tourist industry.
Improving waste management will contribute to Tonga's economic development
through increased tourism and improved recycling operations. This project on
Tongatapu will also serve as a model for waste reduction strategies in other
parts of Tonga. About two thirds of Tonga's population of some 100,000 live on
Tongatapu.
