MEDIA RELEASE

Australia is to provide $1.2 million for water and sanitation services for thousands of Ugandans displaced by war.

The Parliamentary Secretary for Foreign Affairs, Teresa Gambaro today announced the contribution to the UNICEF Uganda water and sanitation program.

'The funding will allow the continued installation of toilets, water tanks, the drilling of boreholes and repairs to water points in displaced persons camps throughout Uganda,' said Ms Gambaro.

An estimated 1.7 million people, including 935,000 children have been forced into more than 200 camps in northern Uganda as a result of the 20-year conflict between the Uganda People's Defence Force and the rebel Lord's Resistance Army (LRA).

'Clean water and sanitation facilities at camps are an essential part of maintaining adequate standards of health and preventing the outbreak and spread of debilitating diseases such as cholera,' Ms Gambaro said.

'Through this program Australia is helping to sustain the health of the thousands forced to flee to camps as a result of the Ugandan civil conflict.

'The funding to UNICEF reinforces the Australian Government's support for the alleviation of the humanitarian crises resulting from drought and conflict in Africa,' Ms Gambaro said.
