MEDIA RELEASE

Australia will contribute $10 million to the United Nations Central Emergency Response Fund to help ensure timely and coordinated reaction to humanitarian crises and emergencies.

The UN Secretary General launched the Central Emergency Response Fund yesterday in New York. The UN is aiming to attract US$500 million for the Fund.

Australia's contribution will enhance our reputation as a significant contributor to life-saving rapid responses around the globe.

A recent review of the UN's humanitarian agenda found existing resources are unable to react quickly to sudden disasters like the Pakistan earthquake. The UN also provides ongoing assistance to countries crippled by long term emergencies such as food shortages and conflict.

The Fund will increase the ability of the UN to respond quickly to humanitarian emergencies such as natural disasters, providing international agencies with instant funds.

It will also act as a buffer against future shortfalls and delays in efforts to alleviate chronic hunger and suffering in Africa.
