MEDIA RELEASE

Australia is doubling funding for a regional initiative to combat the production, use and trade of illicit drugs in South East Asia.

A further $2 million is being provided, extending the Illicit Drug Initiative to Vietnam and China. Illicit drugs are a major, growing problem in our region, inextricably linked to organised crime and corruption.

The initiative will fund regional and national efforts that focus on law enforcement, data collection and also improved treatment and rehabilitation for addicts,

Without an effective regional response, illicit drugs pose serious political and security threats to our region.

Implemented by the Australian Government's international aid agency, AusAID, this initiative will draw on the considerable expertise of other Australian Government agencies such as the Australian Customs Service and the Australian Federal Police as well as peak bodies and international agencies working in drug abuse issues.

Australia will work closely with partner governments in South-East Asia and with China to ensure that gains in one country are not undermined by inadequate responses in neighbouring countries.
