MEDIA RELEASE

I am pleased to announce the delivery of the first shipments of Australian goods to East Timor to assist the United Nations Popular Consultation Process.

A shipment containing 25 four-wheel drive vehicles and other materials for the UN headquarters was unloaded in the East Timor capital Dili yesterday. A further shipment containing medical supplies and more vehicles will depart Darwin for East Timor later this week.

The Australia Government has also offered to provide three chartered helicopters and crew to assist the UN consultative process. The first helicopter is expected to arrive in Dili in the next few days.

This assistance is part of the Australian Governments $20 million contribution to the United Nations Popular Consultation Process in East Timor.
