I am pleased to announce the Australian Government will commit $59.8 million to help developing countries protect their environment and promote environmentally sustainable economic growth.
The funding, through the Global Environment Facility (GEF), will help developing countries reduce the impact of desertification and climate change, and maintain biodiversity. The funding will also help maintain the health of international waterways and reduce damaging pollutants and ozone depleting substances.
GEF projects assist in practical ways, such as removing barriers to efficient energy production and helping people in desert regions manage their fragile environments better. The GEF also helps countries collaborate with their neighbours on shared water systems, helping to prevent conflicts over water use.
Australia's contribution to the Fourth Replenishment of the Global Environment Facility (GEF) includes $47.1 million of regular funding plus $12.7 million in supplementary funding. Australia is providing supplementary funding along with at least 20 other donors to help move the Fourth Replenishment closer to its target of USD3.3 billion.
Negotiations for the Replenishment were successfully concluded yesterday before the start of the Third Assembly of the GEF in Cape Town.
Australia's commitment to the Fourth Replenishment takes the Government's total contributions to the GEF to $244 million since it was established in 1991.
