Australia will provide up to $1 million to help meet the immediate needs of
regional organisations dealing with the recent outbreak of Avian Influenza virus
in Asia.
While the source of the virus is not clear, epidemics have been reported in
several countries and the virus continues to spread quickly. Large numbers of
birds have been destroyed in order to contain the spread but further reports of
new outbreaks are emerging daily.
Eight people have died after contracting the disease from birds. But as yet
there is no reported case of human to human transmission.
According to the World Health Organisation, the Avian Influenza has the
potential to become a serious risk to both human health and agricultural
productivity. The impact on international trade and economic progress in the
region could be significant.
Australian officials are in discussion with regional organisations including
representatives of the World Health Organisation to determine immediate
assistance needs. Australia's contribution will help provide specialist medical
and laboratory expertise and assistance with the destruction of affected
birds.
As in the case of the SARS virus in 2003, a well coordinated international
effort will be required to combat Avian Influenza.
