MEDIA RELEASE

I am pleased to congratulate the Australian Agency for International
Development (AusAID) for being awarded the prestigious ANZAC Peace Prize for
2003 by the RSL.

The award recognises outstanding efforts in promoting international
understanding and peace and is a tribute to the effectiveness of Australia's
overseas aid agency. Australia has a strong track record of responding to
conflict and promoting peace and stability through humanitarian and development
assistance.

I would like to especially recognise the AusAID staff, as this honour is a
reflection of their professionalism, expertise and dedication. It is through
their efforts - working on behalf of all Australians - that Australia's aid
program reaches tens of millions of people living in poverty each year.

Finally I would like to thank the RSL for recognising the work of Australians
in promoting peace and I extend my congratulations to the seven selfless
Australians whose have been bestowed the 2003 ANZAC of the Year awards.
