Australia will support the international rehabilitation efforts in El
Salvador following the devastating earthquake which struck the Central American
region earlier this month.
Australians have been deeply saddened by the loss of life and devastation
caused by the earthquake. More than 700 people have died and tens of thousands
more remain injured and homeless. Official estimates suggest more than 70,000
homes were destroyed forcing the evacuation of over 68,000 people.
The Australian Government contribution of $100,000 will be made through the
International Federation of the Red Cross and will include the provision of
food, medicines, shelter materials and blankets.
Australia's Embassy in Mexico City made an earlier contribution to the
disaster fund established by the Government of El Salvador.
