Media release from the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade
Heads of mission from Australia's most significant Asian posts are attending a two-day meeting in Canberra to discuss regional issues.
The ambassadors, high commissioners and one consul-general have travelled from Tokyo, Jakarta, Beijing, Seoul, Hong Kong, Hanoi, Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, Manila and New Delhi. The Representative of the Australian Commerce and Industry Office in Taipei is also attending.
Security matters, trade and economic issues, public diplomacy and management and resource issues are high on the agenda. The 7-8 March meeting, chaired by DFAT Secretary Dr Ashton Calvert, will also enable the heads of mission to familiarise themselves with the policy environment in Australia.
The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Alexander Downer, and the Minister for Trade, Mark Vaile, will be actively engaged with the Heads of Mission during their meeting.
The two-day meetings are held every two years in Canberra. Following the conclusion of this year's meeting, various heads of mission will undertake business programs in state capitals and regional centres.
