MEDIA RELEASE

Following the Vanuatu Government's renewed commitment to the principles
of good governance and economic reform, I am pleased to announce a delegation
from AusAID and the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade will visit Vanuatu
this week (14-18 February 2005) for detailed consultations with the Vanuatu
Government on a new joint aid strategy.
This strategy will set the direction for Australia's development
cooperation with Vanuatu for the next five years, and has been jointly
developed by the Governments of Vanuatu and Australia through a process of wide
consultation with stakeholders.
Recognising that there are many development challenges facing Vanuatu,
Australia will work closely with the Vanuatu Government to ensure our aid
program contributes to a prosperous and stable Vanuatu.
Vanuatu has a young and growing population. Aside from supporting
economic growth initiatives, Australia will provide $1.1 million to support a
two-year pilot program, targeting urban youth. This will seek to create
improved employment opportunities for young people, raise awareness of health
issues, and provide a forum for youth leaders.
Youth living in informal settlements will be a particular focus.
The program will be managed by a community-based organisation, Wan Smolbag.
Wan Smolbag is well-known and respected throughout the Pacific, particularly
for its use of the performing arts and radio to educate and inform young people
about issues affecting them such as HIV/AIDS, environmental protection and
electoral rights.
