Gender equality

The Australian Government has launched a new International Gender Equality Strategy.

The Australian Government is firmly committed to gender equality and advancing the human rights of women and girls both globally and in the Indo-Pacific.

Gender equality benefits everyone. It creates opportunities for everyone to thrive, while making our region more secure, resilient, and inclusive.

DFAT’s work includes:

  • implementation of the Australia's new International Gender Equality Strategy.
  • oversight of the Gender Equality Fund to drive innovative gender equality initiatives
  • engaging on gender equality issues in multilateral fora, principally through the Commission on the Status of Women, and a range of regional and specialist technical groupings.

DFAT is also responsible for coordinating whole-of-government implementation of Australia’s National Action Plan on Women, Peace and Security 2021-2031, and supporting the Ambassador for Gender Equality.
