Recently at Thakhin Mya Park in Yangon, more than 150 girls aged between about 10 to 18 years from the outskirts of Yangon participated in volleyball mini-matches, as part of the Strong Girls in Myanmar volleyball event. They were joined by high-profile women athletes from Australia and Myanmar, including international medal winners.
The Australian Embassy in Myanmar supported the event organised by Girl Determined and their partners – Women Win International, a global leader in promoting girls and women in sports, and Volleyball Australia, a guiding administrative body of volleyball in Australia.
'Sports can be a powerful tool to promote cultural exchange and support emerging women leaders' said Nick Cumpston, Counsellor at the Australian Embassy."
Throughout the day the girls showed increasing skill and confidence. The event emphasised the rights for girls and women to lead and participate in sports.
