Australia and Lithuania

Lithuania (EU, OECD, NATO) and Australia enjoy good cooperation, including in multilateral fora, and are strong supporters of free trade.

Key engagement

The relationship between Australia and Lithuania is underpinned by agreements covering Trade and Economic Cooperation (1993) and Investment Promotion and Protection (2002).


Trade between Australia and Lithuania is modest, but growing.

Bilateral relations

Australia recognised Lithuanian independence in August 1991. The Australian Ambassador in Warsaw is accredited to Lithuania. Australia has a Consulate in Vilnius, headed by an Honorary Consul. Since October 2008, the Lithuanian Ambassador in Tokyo has been accredited to Australia. Lithuania has Honorary Consulates in Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide.

Foreign policy

Lithuania is the largest of the three Baltic States, and is an EU Member State. Lithuania has similar views to Australia on most issues, and is an open, pro-Western country. We have a good track record of cooperation in multilateral fora. It is pro-free trade, and trades with EU states as well as with Russia.

Australia and Lithuania are both members of the Global Coalition against Daesh. Lithuania has six military trainers deployed in Iraq, and 50 Lithuanian troops serving as part of the Resolute Support Mission in Afghanistan.

Lithuania celebrated in 2018 the 100th year of the Restoration of the Lithuanian State.
