Action Aid's Women's Land Rights project provides legal support to women on their land rights in Northern Uganda. Widows in Northern Uganda are particularly vulnerable to land grabbing; so many widows join the project.
The project develops capacity and provides opportunities for women to negotiate their rights within customary systems and with the Government's laws and policies. Action Aid Australia's implementing partner – Action Aid Uganda – runs mobile clinics, trains paralegals, holds radio talk shows and runs schoolchildren's debates. They have also established a higher-level committee to discuss women's land rights at the regional level.
In 2016, the project also supported Ugandan women to gather with their sisters from across the African continent to develop a joint charter [PDF 1.4 MB] for their land rights, which was handed to the African Union.
This project is led by Action Aid Australia and is funded through Australian Aid from the Australian NGO Cooperation Program (ANCP).
