Improving healthcare for refugees in India

Act for Peace and its local partner, the Organisation for Eelam Refugees Rehabilitation (OfERR), are improving the quality of health care across 107 refugee camps in India. These camps house over 60,000 Tamil refugees from Sri Lanka.

The program achieves its success through linking refugees to essential healthcare services. It also provides nutrition support and personal development programs.

OfERR trains healthcare workers to screen and treat refugees, provides financial assistance for patients requiring urgent hospital care, and delivers a wide range of health education sessions across the camps to help prevent further illness.

The program places a special focus on the most vulnerable groups, including children and pregnant women, as well as special assistance to persons living with a disability.

Padman and his family became refugees in 2006 when they escaped the Sri Lankan civil war. They have been living in a camp in Tamil Nadu ever since. The program offers Padman the physiotherapy and medical care he needs to stay well, and helps him to continue his education until he's ready to return home.

Act for Peace is supported by the Australian Government through the Australian NGO Cooperation Program.
