Assisi Aid Projects is working to improve the financial independence of 1156 single women-headed families in 35 rural villages in Tamil Nadu, India.
Life in rural Indian communities is typically male-led, creating economic and social dependency, leaving women powerless if they become single. These women are frequently subjected to discrimination, impacting on their psychological state, dignity, self-esteem and physical health.
The enhanced livelihoods for single women-headed families program is implemented through the set-up of 34 Women's Groups. The Women's Groups provides a safe space for women to share their stories, challenges, and participate in a structured counselling, skills training and rights-based education program to enable them to earn an income and be self-sufficient.
In the past year, women participated in training on tailoring, vegetable growing, animal raising, making soap, candles and food products. The income has not just helped meet basic needs, but also increased women's confidence and self-esteem. Access to income has brought community recognition and an improved status in the community.
This program is led by Assisi Aid Projects and is funded through Australian Aid from the Australian NGO Cooperation Program (ANCP).
