Korea Rebuilds: From Crisis to Opportunity

Korea Rebuilds: From Crisis to Opportunity

Asia's financial crisis sent major shock waves through the Korean economy,
exposing fundamental structural weaknesses. However, in 1998 Korea's new
administration moved decisively to overhaul the financial and corporate
sectors, liberalise and encourage foreign investment and open Korean goods and
service markets to international competition.

As a result, Korea leads the worst affected Asian economies in emerging
from the crisis, even though its structural problems were among the deepest.
For Australian business, Korea's reforms will expand significantly trade and
investment opportunities in our third largest export market.

This timely and in-depth report examines the causes of Korea's economic
crisis, the Korean Government's strategies to overcome it and their success in
restoring sustainable economic growth. Reforms to trade and investment
regimes, political developments, the new business environment, Australia-Korea
business relations, macroeconomic policies, and financial sector, corporate
and labour market reforms are all evaluated and implications for Australian
business highlighted.
