The Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology, RMIT University, one of
Australia's largest tertiary institutions, has a substantial Indian
student population due to early targeting of the Indian market. RMIT
started exploring the Indian market in the early 1990s and Indian student
numbers doubled annually between 1995 and 1999. Growth in 2000 and 2001
slowed slightly from this strong pace, but Indian students still
constitute 11 per cent of the RMIT international student population, or
711 students in total. Indian students are predominantly studying
postgraduate courses, particularly in business, management and more
recently information technology and computer science and engineering.
Over time, RMIT has found successfully enrolling Indian students
requires establishing a strong network of Indian agents able to provide
the best service and image for the University. As RMIT research indicates
several gaps in the Indian tertiary system that the University' s courses
can fill, it is very positive about the future potential of the Indian
market.
