In the past five years, the Australian Hospital Design Group, AHDG,
developed several hospital and other healthcare facilities in Asia.
Although its initial focus was on South East Asia, the organisation
recently became involved in several projects in India.
In early 1998, AHDG undertook a series of visits to India. By 2001,
AHDG was involved in the planning of a 500 bed facility in Chennai and
negotiating to plan and build similar facilities in Mumbai and Delhi. AHDG
provides health planning, architectural and engineering services and also
plans to provide health professional education and training to build
Indian capacities in these areas.
AHDG believes increasing wealth and acceptance of private health
practices is translating into strong potential in the Indian private
health market. It finds Indian partners prefer them to commit to the
ongoing operation of a project once it is completed. If Australian firms
make a long term commitment to the market, undertake careful due diligence
on potential partners, build strong face to face relationships and
undertake careful negotiations, they can enjoy considerable success.
