The Australia–India Council receives its program funding from the Australian Government in the form of an annual grant-in-trust administered by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade. The Council received new program funding in 2000–01 of $750 000.

During 2000–01 the AIC spent $733 793 on a range of projects either initiated by the Council, or initiated by individuals or organisations who sought and obtained funding under the Council's competitive funding application process.

The total value of activities which received AIC funding was far greater than the amount of AIC funding, as most of the activities involved substantial joint funding and in-kind support from other organisations and individuals in both countries. The Council's experience has been that AIC funding has generally attracted contributions from project participants, or other individuals or organisations, at two to three times the level of Council project expenditure.

The Council considered 60 applications for funding during 2000–01 and provided funding for 39 of the projects represented by these applications. The amounts provided for specific projects ranged from $930 to $65 305.

The Council reviewed and redefined its program funding categories during 2000–01, allocating priority to projects in the arts (including arts management), education (including Australian studies and Indian studies) and health and social issues.

During 2000–01, a total of 119 people, comprising 25 Indian women, 35 Indian men, 27 Australian women and 32 Australian men, travelled between Australia and India in connection with projects supported by the Council.
