Summary
Vanuatu's Ministry of Education achievements and problems in 2011, and planned focus areas for the Ministry in 2012.
Description
This report provides a comprehensive overview of Vanuatu's Ministry of Education, including structure, resources, responsibilities and priorities. It contains detailed reporting on achievements and failures for 2011, and plans for 2012.
Progress in improving access to primary education is close to interim targets for 2012, but education quality and management continue to encounter delays. The appointment of a permanent Director General came about in July 2011 after 18 months of the position being vacant. Only 50 per cent of the government's development budget (key donors: AusAID, NZ and UNICEF) for education was spent to deliver the Vanuatu Education Road Map in 2011, and 80 per cent of the ministry's recurrent budget was spent on salaries and allowances. Financial and administrative training for school heads and provincial staff is being planned and will be included in the school-based management program. Curriculum development is currently progressing for Years 1 to 6.
