Summary

This document is the annual report for 2009 on second-year progress of the Pacific Non-communicable Disease Programme.

Description

This document is the annual report for 2009 on second-year progress of the Pacific Non-communicable Disease Programme.

The report notes that many new country and regional activities commenced under the programme in 2009. Recruitment of additional staff helped to strengthen country-level management and implementation of activities. Negotiations were initiated, and in some cases completed, for large country grants. Small grants were provided to countries for disease prevention and health promotion, including Fiji. The report summarises the non-communicable disease status of each Pacific country, noting that in Fiji non-communicable diseases have replaced infectious diseases as the principal cause of morbidity and mortality.
