Key findings
In 2012-13, the Australian Government provided $5,056.9 million official development assistance (ODA), an increase of $232 million (5 per cent) on the previous year, representing an ODA to Gross National Income (GNI) ratio of 0.34 per cent.
Development assistance support
Our largest efforts were focused on development assistance support at $1302.5 million or 25 per cent of total ODA, of which:
- refugees in donor countries was $250.3 million
- general environment protection was $183.8 million
- commodity aid and general program assistance was $149.5 million.
Government and civil society
Government and civil society accounted for $967.4 million or 19 per cent of total ODA with:
- government and civil society general at $771.2 million
- conflict prevention and resolution, peace and security at $84.8 million.
Education
Education accounted for $855.5 million, or 17 per cent of total ODA.
Health
A total of $844.3 million (17 per cent) was spent on health through:
- health, general at $670.7 million
- providing access to safe water and sanitation at $173.6 million.
Economic development
Economic development accounted for $695.1 million or 14 per cent of total ODA of which economic infrastructure and services was $352.7 million or 51 per cent of total economic development.
Humanitarian assistance
Humanitarian assistance accounted for $392.2 million or 8 per cent of total ODA, of which emergency response was the largest component at $303.3 million.
