Summary
Report on phase 1 of the initiative aimed to raise awareness amongst Burmese officials of basic human rights and international law principles.
Description
The Human Rights Initiative, Phase 1, aimed to raise awareness amongst
Burmese officials of basic human rights and international law principles, the
major international human rights instruments and the role of the United Nations
in the promotion and protection of human rights.
A series of workshops was held in Burma between June 2000 and November 2002 by Australian human rights experts contracted through the Castan Centre for Human Rights Law, Monash University, on Human Rights and Responsibilities and Rights of the Child.
A second phase of the Human Rights Initiative focusing on the practical
implementation of human rights protection and promotion was developed.
However, its implementation was postponed in 2003 following the detention of
Aung San Suu Kyi and her colleagues from the National League for Democracy.
