Deregulation of the energy industry: the Australian experience

Australia-Japan Foundation (AJF) Grant 2017-18

The Japanese Government deregulated the Japanese electricity market in 2016, as one of the reforms that came out of the Fukushima nuclear incident of 2011. Australia began to deregulate its electricity market in 1998 with the development of the National Electricity Market.

This report examines how Australia's institutional structures evolved as deregulation has been implemented, and the outcomes achieved particularly in terms of security of supply and energy prices. It also focuses on consumers' engagement in the energy market. The report presents Australia's expertise in managing deregulated energy markets and will inform Japan's electricity market policy reform.
