Replacement of the Agreement between the Government of Australia and the European
Atomic Energy Community concerning Transfers of Nuclear Material from Australia
to the European Energy Community

Description of issue

The new Agreement between the Government of Australia and the European Atomic Energy Community (Euratom) for Co-operation in the Peaceful Uses of Nuclear Energy brings Australia's Agreement with Euratom into line with other nuclear co-operation Agreements which cover inter alia: nuclear cooperation and the two-way reciprocal obligations on transfers of nuclear material, non-nuclear material, equipment and technology. The Agreement replaces and updates a 1982 Agreement that was due to expire in January 2012.

The six separate Agreements which Australia previously entered into with the United Kingdom, France, Finland, Sweden, Hungary and Czech Republic will continue to be complementary to, or where appropriate, be superseded by, the provisions of the new Agreement.

Date of effect

The Agreement was signed in Canberra on the 5th of September 2011, and entered into force on 1 January 2012.
