Extension to the Agreement between Australia and the United States of America concerning Peaceful Uses of Nuclear Energy
Description of issue
The Agreement between the Government of Australia and the Government of the United States of America concerning Peaceful Uses of Nuclear Energy governs cooperation in peaceful uses of nuclear energy between Australia and the United States, including the transfer and use of, and application of non-proliferation safeguards to, nuclear material supplied by the Parties. The Agreement replaces and updates a 1979 agreement of the same name that was due to expire in January 2011.
Date of effect
The Agreement was signed on 4 May 2010 and was tabled in Parliament on 12 May 2010. The Joint Standing Committee on Treaties tabled its report on 16 November 2010 and the Agreement entered into force on 22 December 2010 following an exchange of diplomatic notes.
