Multilateral Policy and Human Rights (MPD)

This resolution aims to reflect the current human rights situation in Iran without prejudice.

Chair, more than two-thirds of the UN have spoken. They have made a decision to support the moratorium on the use of the death penalty.

Chair, this resolution calls upon member states to establish a moratorium on executions, with a view to abolishing the death penalty. It does not decide or demand that member states do this. It simply calls upon member states to establish a moratorium.

Australia welcomes the consensus adoption of the Convention Against Cybercrime, recognising the dedication and efforts of all delegations throughout the extensive negotiations and consultations that have gone into shaping the Convention.

This is of grave concern to Australia and we are pleased to see language that articulates Russia’s instrumentalization of this resolution adopted into the resolution, and thank member states for their support.

No member state in this room will deny the utmost importance of combating the glorification of Nazism, Neo-Nazism and other practices that fuel contemporary forms of racism. Australia too unequivocally supports this.

Advancing and protecting the rights of Indigenous Peoples is a high priority for Australia, and we welcome the detailed focus of this resolution on the myriad challenges that Indigenous Peoples face in realising their rights.

Australia has long advocated for human rights and freedoms for all, consistent with the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

Australia is deeply concerned by the report’s findings that violence, and the threat of violence, are the most prominent obstacles to electoral participation by LGBTQIA+ people.

Australia is a strong, unwavering supporter of both the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its Sustainable Development Goals.
